(Note though that at 8 days old, I was also given a Jewish name at my bris\/circumcision ceremony-- \u05e2\u05d6\u05e8\u05d0 \u05de\u05dc\u05da \u05d1\u05df \u05d0\u05d1\u05e8\u05d4\u05dd \u05d6\u05dc\u05de\u05df or \u201cEzra Melech son of Avraham Zalman\u201d and that is still my name for Jewish ritual purposes.\u00a0\u00a0This common Jewish practice of <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1878678\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">having a \u201cJewish name\u201d and a \u201csecular name\u201d has interesting implications for naming fashion)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1996, shortly before <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lisawassermansivan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my wife Lisa<\/a> gave birth to our first child, we added the name \"Sivan\" to our existing last names (hers was Wasserman) so that we would have a common family name (\u201cSivan\u201d is the only last name held by the four children with whom we have been blessed\u2014Jack, Nina, Jesse, and Libby).\u00a0\u00a0The Chicago judge who issued the name change wondered why we didn\u2019t do this when we first got married; you would have thought that he would have just enjoyed the break from the dreary probate cases he was presiding over.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, we have run into a few other families that have adopted similar approaches to choosing a family name (not that we expected it would become fashionable).\u00a0\u00a0Insofar as it does not fit easily into conventional practice, it can lead to some difficulty, but none that cannot be managed pretty easily.\u00a0\u00a0It also has some advantages: it can be a nice opener for conversation in our (hopefully) multicultural, tolerant age, and it is a great way to gain insight into the foundations of identity\u2014a topic that greatly interests me.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I am sometimes called by other names, which are unprintable here.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Most of the time, this is not done to my face, and so I can remain blissfully unaware of it.\u00a0\u00a0(See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csun.edu\/~egodard\/asatheory\/newsletters\/Perspectives-2010-May.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> for some thoughts relating to this issue).<\/p>\n<\/div>    <\/div><!-- jumbotron--bio --><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"d-none jumbotron bg-cover\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/mitmgmtfaculty.mit.edu\/esivan\/wp-content\/themes\/mitfaculty2021\/assets\/images\/jumbotron_bg_blue.jpg);\">\t<div class=\"container\">\t\t<div class=\"col-lg-8 col-md-8 col-sm-8 col-xs-12 no-padding-left\">\t\t<h1>Ezra Zuckerman Sivan<\/h1>\t\t\t<div class=\"teasertext\"><p>Welcome to my website.
